A fine toothed bone saw blade with duct tape is the lightest "saw" I take ever used to cut a skull. A 24TPI hacksaw blade has worked too.

I utilize a wyoming saw. I bring it in on my second trip and take the antlers out then. Non light weight just works very well.

I use a low-cal weight Gerber. It works ok and weighs nothing. I gutted 12 elk with it so far this flavour and removed a few skull caps with it.

I've cut the skull cap on a lot of elk over the years with a few dissimilar saws or contraptions.......and there's no comparing to the WY Saw or that kind of pattern. You can cut through the cap in simply a couple minutes with it, whereas some of those lightweight options will take you wanting to utilize your boot to finish the job. I tried the Gerber Exchange a blade saw one year on a "small" bull and concluded up kicking the heck out of it to break it gratis, eventually breaking the skull cap in two. Merely later on several minutes of attempted sawing after already breaking downwardly a balderdash, I don't accept a lot of patience for inadequate tools. I'll carry out the whole head before I use one of those again.

Hands down a WY Saw, 14" model is the best! 18" is likewise long & 12" is a knuckle buster. Nosotros've used them for years & they are the best a fleck over 1lb.

I adapted a 15" Sven to a 14" WY Saw blade. Both blades included it weighs eleven.three oz
To be more specific i ordered a xiv bone blade with their threaded tension end. Drilled another hole in my Sven frame to accomodate the shorter Wyoming blade and swapped out the rivet for a thumb screw. Adjacent I ground the square ends off of the Wyoming tension screw and it fit into the Sven handle similar butter. Pretty happy with the effect, those T handles and folding blades tin suck it

I have a Bacho Laplander folding saw with the regular forest bract. It works bully on deer I oasis't killed an elk yet merely I recall it would work fine on them also. I think it is the best folding saw made. Information technology's great for trimming trees and cutting fire wood besides.

The Havalon Barracuda with the os saw blade has me interested considering of its calorie-free weight and dual purpose.

I agree, I accept never been able to exit horns out in the wood myself, had bears swipe my elk cape out of a tree, it'd be difficult to loose some antlers

BTW squeamish pis Ross!

I simply picked one of These upwardly last week. It will be in my pack next season for sure, but I'g skeptical about its ability to cut off a skull cap. Seems like it would require a pregnant amount of endeavor. I'm hoping to be pleasantly surprised.

One of the guys already nailed it. Wyoming Two, carry information technology back in the 2nd trip and saw the antlers and then.

The little cheapy Sierra saw will work, only yous'll need a long pause after cutting a large bull skull plate with it. They are super light, and the replacement blades are less the $x I believe. Information technology's what I comport, but the Wyoming saw volition do a faster and ameliorate chore for certain.
